Morning Breath, Bad Taste in Mouth: Is it Halistosis?

by admin / Friday, 01 April 2011 / Published in Bad Breath, Causes Symptoms & Remedies

Waking with ‘morning breath‘ or a bad taste in the mouth is a common occurrence especially if you are a smoker, drink alcohol or have eaten spicy foods the previous evening. However if you find it is more common that not, could it be halitosis?

What is Halitosis?

Halitosis or Oral Malodour is simply known to us as bad breath. It is an oral health condition characterized by a rather unpleasant odor exhaled when breathing. Although halitosis is just a minor disease, it is one of the most embarrassing problems usually faced by about a quarter of the world’s population. Having chronic bad breath lowers your self-confidence and self-respect. It can damage or even destroy your social life. Halitosis can cause severe problems to your professional and personal relationships. It could easily be confused with morning breath since most people at some point would wake with bad breath for numerous reasons.

What are the symptoms of Halitosis?

One thing about having bad breath is that even your closest friend will not tell you for fear of offending you. So if you notice people avoiding direct contact from you or even step back when you talk to them then you most probably have bad breath. You can also check by yourself by licking the back of your hand; let it dry and then smell it. If you notice the unpleasant odor, then you have bad breath. Having thick saliva and the persistent need to swallow are also symptoms of halitosis. Frequently having a bad taste in your mouth and having a white or yellow coating in the tongue surface are also signs to look out for.

What are the causes of Halitosis?

Halitosis is caused by anaerobic bacteria proliferating in the mouth especially in the tongue. With poor oral care, the mouth can be a breeding ground for bacteria. Dry mouth is also a cause of halitosis because with low saliva production, the mouth is incapable of cleansing itself from particles and remains left by the food you eat. Excessive breathing with the mouth instead of the nose also gets the mouth very dry. Certain foods also contribute to bad breath such as garlic, onions and those high with protein, sugar and acid. Drinking Alcohol and smoking tobacco also leads to bad breath.

What are the ways to treat Halitosis?

Brushing and flossing your teeth and seeing the dentist regularly greatly reduces bad breath. The use of mouthwash after brushing also helps eradicate bacteria build up. It is also recommended that you use effective tongue cleaners since the tongue holds most of the bacteria in the mouth. Drinking plenty of water always is a simple yet very effective way to avoid having dry mouth. Do away from drinking, smoking and bad breath causing foods and drinks such as coffee and ice cream. Increase your fruit and vegetable intake. Also, chewing a very green guava is known to be a fast cure for halitosis.
