What Causes Diarrhea
Diarrhoea is the condition of having frequent or loose stools. In developing countries acute diarrhea is very common. Dehydration can be the result of the frequent watery stools when they are left unchecked. You can also loose dangerous amounts of salts, nutrients and electrolytes due to diarrhea.
Diarrhea is normally caused by mild viruses. This is especially true in areas where proper sanitation is an issue. There are more serious forms of diarrhea that are caused by severe infections such as botulism and cholera.
A chronic condition such as Crohn’s disease or severe mushroom poisoning can also cause diarrhea that inhibit a person’s ability to live a normal life. Being lactose intolerant can also cause diarrhea when dairy products are ingested.
Diarrhea Symptoms
Diarrhoea is most commonly associated with loose or frequent stools. There can also be cramping, bloating and gas involved which can make the condition even more unpleasant. Dehydration is another symptom of diarrhoea. Dehydration can cause dry mouth, fatigue and can also make your eyes look sunken in.
Diarrhea Treatment
Prevention is best when it comes to diarrhea. You should always wash your hands after you using the restroom and after having contact with people outside of your family. Try to avoid eating any shell fish from a buffet if you must eat at a buffet. Eating three servings of yogurt with pro-biotics everyday, or taking a pro-biotic supplement such as Xbiotic is advisable.
When you get diarrhea it is important to immediately change your diet. You should stick to a liquid and soft food diet until the diarrhea clears up. Mashed potatoes, chicken broth and gelatin are all good foods that will be easy on your stomach. Make sure that you are ingesting plenty of clear liquids to keep your body hydrated.
If the diarrhoea is mild you can also eat yogurt, cheese and bananas. All of these foods will naturally stop the loose stools. If you are having stools that are almost exclusively water you may want to buy some electrolyte beverage from the pharmacy. These are most often marketed towards children, but they will work for adults as well.
Echinacea can help boost the effectiveness of your immune system and can be taken with goldenseal to help prevent and stop diarrhoea. Goldenseal has anti- inflammatory and can help your body kill off pathogens. Astragalus is also anti-microbial and can help your body fend off viruses and bacterial infections.
Garlic can help with stomach pain and thyme is also good for treating diarrhea. Spearmint can also ease diarrhea while Aniseed can calm the stomach.
For a mild treatment for sensitive adults or for children you can boil the petals of roses in water and then when the water is cooled, drink the mixture.
