What is Thrush?
Thrush is a yeast infection in that can occur in areas of the body including the mouth (oral thrush) and vagina (vaginal thrush) as well as the digestive tract. Vaginal thrush is also known as Candidiasis and is caused by the candida albicans fungus. The fungus is present in all humans and normally the immune system keeps it in check. When the yeast grows out of control, though, it can lead to infection.
The use of antibiotics, cancer treatments, and having a compromised or low immune system can all cause a thrush infection to become problematic. Children are also more susceptible to thrush than adults. When using prescribed antibiotics these drugs also kill off the good bacteria that keep the yeast in check which in turn can cause a thrush infection.
Cancer treatments can also lower a person’s immunity to opportunistic infections such as thrush.
The symptoms of oral thrush in the mouth are white patches in the mouth that cannot be wiped away. The sores may or may not bleed. There can also be sensitivity to acidic foods and tenderness in the mouth. People with oral thrush may also feel run down and tired all of the time, due to having a lower immune system that is unable to fight invasive bacteria as it should.
Prevention is the best cure for thrush instead of waiting for an infection and then seeking a cure. Sugar feeds the fungus so you should eliminate as much sugar as you can from your diet until the infection clears. Eating highly acidic fruit is another good step to preventing the infection. Citrus fruits and cranberries are very good and drinking cranberry juice is highly advisable for many health benefits.
Eating yogurt of kefir that contains live cultures can be useful in preventing thrush infections. You should eat two to three servings a day or you can take a supplement like XBIOTIC that contains acidophilus; doing this everyday will keep the yeast from getting out of control. Kefir is a fermented beverage that originated in the Middle East. You will find it close to the yogurt at the grocery store.
You can use virgin coconut oil to treat thrush and yeast infections. Astragalus will help support the immune system and so will Echinacea. Olive leaf is soothing and is good for childhood thrush.
You can use garlic as an anti-fungal treatment. Adding some garlic to your diet is a natural and tasty way to end fungal infections. You should balance your body with plenty of leafy green salads each day. Any kind of uncooked greens will help keep your body chemistry in balance. Try spinach, romaine lettuce, arugula, mustard greens, collard greens or any other type of lettuce besides iceberg. Your diet can provide you with powerful protection from thrush.
Elderberry also makes a soothing treatment for the mouth. Stevia is a natural sweetener that can be used instead of sugar. This is important because cutting back on sugar is essential to preventing thrush.
